NEXT ERA INNOVATIONS SPINS OFF FIERCE INDUSTRIES

Dr. Mike Wimmer has long stood out as one of the most remarkable young minds in technology and entrepreneurship. Beginning his journey at the age of 7 by founding Next Era Innovations, he quickly achieved milestones that many seasoned professionals only dream of: winning international robotics awards at 8, securing his first defense contract at 10, and completing a Ph.D. in innovation by 16. While his peers were navigating typical adolescent milestones, Dr. Mike was engineering solutions to complex global challenges.

This summer, at just 16, Dr. Mike quietly achieved another significant milestone. He established Fierce Industries as a distinct entity spun out from Next Era Innovations. This new venture represents a strategic evolution, focusing on developing advanced robotic systems for extreme environments where conventional approaches fall short.

Dr. Mike Wimmer came to recognize the critical need for greater intelligence and true autonomy in extreme environments while conducting in-depth research to develop a commercially viable solution to the invasive lionfish crisis.

Lionfish, an invasive species native to the Indo-Pacific, have devastated coral reefs by preying on native marine life and disrupting ecosystems. Their venomous spines, rapid reproduction, and camouflage abilities make traditional removal methods (such as diver-led hunts) ineffective at scale, particularly in deeper waters.

Dr. Mike’s response was characteristic: he prioritized artificial intelligence from the outset. He developed ALFREDD (Autonomous LionFish Realtime Edge Detection and Depopulation), a sophisticated AI system capable of identifying camouflaged lionfish in challenging underwater conditions with exceptional accuracy, far surpassing human capabilities in murky or current-heavy environments.

When existing robotic platforms proved inadequate to deploy this AI effectively, unable to withstand strong currents, navigate intricate coral structures, or support the required onboard computing, Dr. Mike developed his own solution. The result is the F1 Platform, the world’s first intelligent underwater vehicle (IUV) platform, distinguishing itself as the first to be developed with AI at its very core from the initial design phase.

Unlike conventional underwater robots, the F1 Platform was purpose-built around advanced autonomy. This foundational approach enables unparalleled performance in demanding marine environments, powering mission-critical applications while setting a new benchmark for intelligent, adaptive subsea systems. The F1 Platform features a unique ten thruster configuration for superior maneuverability, a custom underwater flight controller operating system known as Horizon ROS, pressure-resistant edge computing capabilities, and a bespoke hydrodynamic shape.

Building on this foundation, the Reef Sweeper emerged as the first mission-specific application of the F1 Platform: an IUV engineered to locate, target, and remove lionfish. The Reef Sweeper integrates ALFREDD’s detection prowess with precise navigation and spearing mechanisms, combining autonomous operation with human oversight for reliability. Fierce Industries is now accepting pre-orders for the ReefSweeper via this interest form: https://forms.gle/KvqicBTs1WzrF6Ur5

While developing the Reef Sweeper, Dr. Mike gained a stark perspective on the underwater robotics landscape. He recognized a profound gap: while AI had advanced dramatically in other domains, true intelligence and adaptive autonomy remained severely limited in subsea environments, constrained by outdated hardware and rudimentary software.

This realization drove him to establish Fierce Industries as a dedicated venture to push the boundaries further. Assembling an elite team, he set out to create something transformative: a foundational ecosystem where cutting-edge artificial intelligence is not an afterthought, but the driving force from the very beginning.

What began as a targeted solution to the lionfish crisis has evolved into a broader mission to redefine intelligent exploration and intervention from the deepest depths to the farthest galaxies. Its core approach is straightforward:

  • Develop the most advanced vision, autonomy, and AI stack possible for the problem at hand.
  • If no off-the-shelf hardware can execute it without compromising performance or safety, engineer the platform in-house.

The ocean served as the initial proving ground, but additional applications are in development. Fierce Industries positions itself as a partner for clients facing extreme-environment challenges, whether in marine conservation, defense, resource inspection, or beyond, delivering complete, bespoke solutions rather than incremental adaptations.

At 17, Wimmer now leads both Next Era Innovations (which continues to focus on consumer AI, educational tools, and other innovative projects) and Fierce Industries. His dual leadership reflects an unwavering commitment to excellence and a refusal to settle for “good enough” when the stakes are high.

As Fierce Industries expands, it signals a new era in applied robotics: one driven by necessity, ingenuity, and a clear vision for impact.

For those confronting problems that demand more than conventional technology can provide, Fierce Industries offers a compelling answer.
